Dear Pastors

I have heard a number of folks say that they can’t wait for New Years Eve to roll around, not so much because of the new year in front of us but rather getting rid of the old year, seeing this year behind us. Fair enough, I get it. It’s been tough and actually it will still be tough for a lot of people around the world as they go into the new year. COVID-19 is not yet done, sadly.

But for now I would like to offer you a few ideas around what you might want to think and pray about as you cycle into 2021.

  1. Have another look at your JD. Do you need to make a correction in relation to the work you are doing? Has there been some slippage? Are you focused on the right things?
  2. When you reflect on your own performance, what would be one thing that you would say, I need to get better at that, I need to stop this or I so want to (need to) master this (name it) new skill?
  3. How is your work/life balance? Is there are anything going on in your personal life and/or family life that needs more of your attention? Do one of your children need some extra time? How will you achieve that? Is their a personal goal you want to achieve? How is the state of your marriage?
  4. Check in with your emotional tank. How much is left in there? What is the reading on your passion meter? Do you need to build in some activities that re-fill your emotional tank next year?
  5. What learning are you going to do this year? Reading will already be part of your weekly routine (hopefully) but what learning will you do?
  6. What is one thing perhaps two things that really frustrate you about your church (the church that you lead) and 2021 is going to be the year that you will address it and resolve it?
  7. As pastors and leaders we face disappointments……..regularly. Have we processed those disappointments in a God-honouring way and found peace in our hearts?
  8. When did you last hear from God? Amongst the craziness of this year has His voice grown dim? Do you need a ‘word’ from above, some revelation that will fuel your soul?
  9. And finally for now, how is your fervour for witness and evangelism?

All this to say that it is a life that is reflected upon that is going to make us into the people God has intended. Otherwise it’s just another walk around the same hill and on exactly the same track. And who wants that?

Blessings

Alan
