Biological Sex vs Gender Identity

Monday 10th May, 2021

POV. Unless you are living under a rock, we are now all aware that this issue is in fact………an issue. In fact some are saying it is the defining issue of our current times. Without a doubt it is a biggey and becomes quite complex the deeper you dive into it. That said, fundamentally I don’t think it is that complex not if we believe the Bible’s teaching on this subject.

The Bible is clear. The Bible attests to the fact that God made Human Beings in His image as male and female only. Being male and female is not something ‘on a spectrum’ to be determined by us as we choose or based on gender roles or gender identity. Sex is binary.

Secondly, Science confirms the fact that sex is binary. Scientists tell us that our sex is formed on a genetic level, namely the presence of a Y chromosome that distinguishes males from females. Therefore and not surprisingly, over 99% of babies are born with either male genitalia or female genitalia (primary sex characteristics). When it comes to hormones, women have estrogen and men have testosterone. That is what leads to secondary sex characteristics such as the development of breasts and wider hips in women and more muscle mass and facial hair in men. And all this and lots more interesting biological facts can be found in your average Year 12 Biology textbook or on a simple Google search.

Let me introduce you to the work of Preston Springle “Preston is highly sought after speaker and teacher. He loves communicating Christian truths with thoughtfulness, honesty and grace. He is passionate about approaching topics that everyone wants to know about, but no one wants to talk about. Topics like sexuality, violence, alcohol, hell, and what it means to follow a Jewish prophet-king who was executed for treason. He works hard to write, speak and teach the truth of Scripture and hopes to challenge others to read the Bible while holding their predetermined beliefs loosely”. Preston has written some outstanding stuff on this subject. What I particularly like about his work is his blend of theology, ethics and sociology.

The Nashville Statement on Human Sexuality is also a very helpful document. It is interesting that Preston Springle is both in agreement with it and in disagreement with the Nashville Statement as he points out on a blog post here.

And finally our own Family First has produced some excellent resources especially this parent guide which is also an excellent resource for pastors and youth leaders. It includes a brief ‘summary of facts’. I highly recommend it.
