The Judge Speaks... On Domestic Violence
A briefing for Christian leaders.

This is the first of a new series of briefings offered by LeadershipWorx entitled, ‘They Speak’.
Pastors and indeed all those who lead in the Church and Christian organisation sector are faced today with a whole raft of very challenging issues that in most cases we are not particularly well equipped for. Everything from competing worldviews, to new technologies, social issues by the score, family problems, religious conflicts, climate change and the list goes on and on and on. This new series hopes to contribute to this space. This is an attempt to have a range of ‘new’ voices who are experts in their field help our thinking and understanding and to make an appropriate response.
We are very pleased to kick this new series off with the voice of a District Court Judge speaking on his perspective on domestic violence.
Judge Garry Collin was appointed to the bench in Hamilton in April 2015. Prior to his appointment Garry was a Barrister specializing in Family and criminal law. In this capacity Garry regularly received appointments as lawyer for the child, lawyer to assist in complex matters and as Counsel for the Central Authority on International child abduction cases. Garry has also served on the New Zealand family law section and the Family Court Expert Reference Group.
All of us agree that the current rates of domestic violence in NZ are shocking and unbelievably sad. We have asked Garry to speak on this subject because he has seen it all both as a defense lawyer (one side of the bench) and now as a Judge (on the other side of the bench). Along with sharing with us the extent of the problem, he will also share his thoughts as to how the church and Christians could respond to issues of violence in our community. There will be 15-20 minutes of Q and A.
Though this briefing is targeting Pastors/Ministers/Vicars it will be of huge benefit to other church staff and para-church leaders as well. Of course professional counsellors, social workers and teachers are very welcome.
