Dear Pastors

Ordering Your Private World

My blog last week – “RZIM, Why I’m Angry” generated a bit of feedback and conversation. Thanks to those who sent me a note. There’s no doubt that what has happened has come as a huge shock and massive disappointment to so many of us. And I get it. What wasn’t there to like about Ravi Zacharias? Very little. He was a charismatic personality, incredibly smart, brilliant apologist and unusually kind to his opponents. But as I said last week all was not good on the inside.

It would have to be more than coincidence that Don and I are speaking on ‘inner life’ issues at ‘Revitalise’ in four weeks’ time. Gordon MacDonald’s book, Ordering Your Private World’ was one of only five or so books that were truly life changing in my early ministry years in the 80’s. He introduced the concept of living as a Called Person and set that off against living as a Driven Person. I instantly knew what I wanted to be and what I wanted to become. In my talk I want to summarise these ideas and share with you the characteristics of a Called Person and how a called pastor-leader might live in 2021.

Don’s talk on ‘Confronting Your Insecurities’ will be worth the 25 bucks alone. Let’s face it we all have a few of these pesky things. It is a stunning talk and I can confidently say will both bless you and help you.

I hope to see you there,

A half day gathering for Pastors and Christian Leaders.

Need a little encouragement?
What about a few moments to reflect on your life and work?
Maybe you could use a few ministry insights right now?

At this short half day gathering Alan will speak on ‘Ordering Your Private World’, a revisit of Gordon MacDonald’s best-selling book (one talk). Don Barry will speak on ‘The Leader as an Environment Architect’ and ‘Confronting your Insecurities’ (two talks). We will also welcome Dr Peter Lineham who Alan will interview about the ‘History of Christianity in NZ from 1960 to 2020’ and the lessons we can and perhaps should learn.

Don and Karen Barry have been Senior Leaders of Gateway Church in Hamilton for the last 23 years. During this season they have watched as God has restored a church, broken and bruised by the sexual failure of previous leaders into a thriving congregation of over 1200 people.

Dr Peter Lineham is a historian, who prior to retirement in January 2019 taught and researched at Massey University, New Zealand. His specialties are History of religion, especially Protestant Christianity in England and the religious history of New Zealand. Peter was made a Member of the Order of New Zealand in the New Year’s honours list of 2019 for services to religious history and the community.

Alan Vink is currently the Executive Director for LeadershipWorx. Prior to this role he has been the Executive Director of Willow Creek Association NZ (WillowNZ), a Baptist pastor (23 years), Bible College teacher, and church consultant.
